Response to Cyclone Haruna

Haruna_21 Feb 2013

On Feb. 22, Tropical Cyclone Haruna made landfall in southern Madagascar as a category two storm. According to the National Disaster Risk Management Office website, as of Feb. 26, nearly 23,000 people have been affected, including 23 casualties. Nearly 10,000 people are homeless due to destruction caused by high winds and floods. The most affected districts were Toliary and Morombe.

ADRA Madagascar is currently monitoring the situation to determine the best course of action to help. Our projects in Ampanihy were not damaged. However, the Ampanihy project coordinator is now in Tulear to gather more information about the needs in the area.

Other organizations, including CRS (Catholic Relief Services), C.A.R.E. (Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere), and the Malagasy Red Cross have already begun relief efforts.
