ADRA Madagascar and Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) Join Forces to Improve Access to Safe Drinking Water in Farafangana District

As part of its partnership with the private sector, ADRA Madagascar with support from the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MC) is implementing a WASH project in rural communities in southeastern Madagascar. Launched on January 15, 2025, for a duration of two years, the project targets 800 households across nine fokontany in the Farafangana district.

The aim of the project is to improve the health and well-being of rural communities by ensuring sustainable and equitable access to safe drinking water, promoting good sanitation and hygiene practices, and strengthening community management of water resources.

Before the works began, a hydrogeological study was conducted in the four intervention communes, identifying nine sites. Locations for the boreholes were determined and validated in consultation with the communities and ADRA commissioned its drilling team for the work.

Three boreholes equipped with sanitation areas were completed in the villages of Ambohimarina (Rural Commune of Amporoforo), Ankazomasy, and Manambotra Centre (Rural Commune of Manambotra Sud) by August 2025.

To ensure proper management and sustainability of the infrastructure, three Water User Committees (CUE) have been established and are now operational. A technician from the DREAH conducted an on-site pumping test. In addition, practical training sessions strengthened the capacities of local technicians, members of the CUE, in the management and maintenance of water points.

In addition, over a three months period, ADRA with the support of Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) conducted awareness-raising activities on good hygiene practices (handwashing, food safety, and personal hygiene) among households.

In the coming months, the project plans to construct six additional new water points in the Farafangana district, strengthen the capacities of the three already active committees in collaboration with DREAH, establish five sanitation blocks, and continue hygiene promotion activities with the support of CHVs.

This partnership reinforces ADRA and MCBs commitment to equitable access to safe drinking water in Madagascar.
