In Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar, the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in March 2020. The pandemic started to reach its highest level in July 2020; the city was under lockdown and all schools had been closed since March. During the school year, ADRA has been implementing a school feeding program with the support of Rise Against Hunger, distributing fortified rice to 41 schools in the capital. However, as a result of the lockdown, school canteen has been suspended and food distribution stopped.
In early July 2020, ADRA partnered with the Ministry of Education to respond to the urgent need of those students that normally benefits from school canteen. 8,077 students from 41 targeted schools received take home rations of fortified rice. Through this response, ADRA could also target all of the students’ family members, who were struggling to access to food during the lockdown.
