Fararano

ADRA Madagascar and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are collaborating to implement the FARARANO project till 2026.

The overall objective of the project is to address immediate humanitarian needs and contribute to reducing food insecurity and increasing the incomes of 2,500 vulnerable households by promoting agricultural production and diversifying income sources.

FARARANO is implemented in four fokontany in the rural commune of Alakamisy Fenoarivo, Antananarivo Atsimondrano district, Analamanga region.

It has two specific objectives:

  • Mitigate against continued household level food insecurity through for climate-smart agriculture support
  • Strengthen household purchasing power through access to markets.

 

These objectives encompass three interdependent sectors of activity: agriculture, livestock, and marketing of agricultural production.

The project expects to achieve 5 results:

Result 1: The agricultural production of 2,000 vulnerable households is improved through to their access to quality agricultural inputs;

Result 2: The nutritional and incomes of 2,500 vulnerable households are improved through the production, consumption and sale of vegetables and poultry;

Result 3: Project beneficiaries have access to markets;

Result 4: Households have quality seeds for the next season

To achieve these results, the project will undertake the activities below:

  • 60 leading farmers will be selected and trained in climate-smart agriculture, integrated pest management (IPM), and post-harvest production management. They will, in turn, support the 2,000 selected households.
  • Vegetable Seeds and crop seeds as well as small agricultural tools will be distributed to these beneficiary households.
  • 6 producer farmer groups will be trained through the Farmer Market School to promote access to markets for producer households.
  • 6 seed-producing farmers will be trained and certified to ensure seed production in the Commune of Alakamisy Fenoarivo
  • In the livestock sector, 06 APPSAs will be trained and certified to support 500 beneficiary households. These households will be provided with 2,000 improved poultry breeds as well as shelter and starter kits.
